About Us

WHO WE ARE

The Adult Inclusion Alliance is a group of adults dedicated to creating a safe & supportive environment for students, with a particular focus on promoting SOGI (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression) inclusion. Our vision is to foster inclusion, respect & empathy for all diverse groups within the Highlands community.

WHY WE EXIST

We want to ensure that, as parents, we are doing all we can to increase awareness and decrease stigma surrounding the 2SLGBTQIA+ community at Highlands.  With the support of the school administration, staff, the parent council, and other AIA groups within Edmonton Public Schools, we are creating a parent-led group to ensure that all kids feel safe, supported, and accepted at Highlands. Our mission statement was created to set the intention for our AIA, which is to ensure every child feels safe and seen within our school community.  Our focus for the coming school year will be been on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, as this community is experiencing heightened levels of discrimination and prejudice.   Our objective is to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in an age-appropriate way.  We are here to promote respect for differences and protect all students from bullying and discrimination. We are simply here to show everyone that they belong and that it is okay to be who they are.  Our differences are not a threat to one another.  We are all part of one school community, and we are all loved.

OUR GOALS

To be parent-led representation & visibility in our school community. This could include button making, stickers, arts and crafts, etc at school events as well as consistent representation at parent council meetings.

To partner with teachers and administrators in carrying the responsibility of making sure all our students feel safe and loved. This could include sharing inclusive books available in our school library, helping to create and support policies and practices that ensure all students feel safe and can flourish.

To be a resource for Highlands families to help combat misinformation about SOGI inclusion in our school. This could include sharing resources about what age-appropriate materials are available, and engaging with families who want to know more about creating and fostering discussions around difference, kindness, empathy, identity, and acceptance.
